DIY Decorating Ideas and Tips
Interior Design and Decorating | April 15, 2022
Decorating doesn’t have to be expensive and it doesn’t have to be time-consuming either. One of the best ways to get something completely unique, without paying for a one-of-a-kind designer piece, is to utilize some of our DIY decorating ideas.
These tips can help you make your space your own and can even dress up cheaper, more generic pieces so that they look designer and expensive.
- Take a pen to your furniture. While it might be a disaster when your kids take a sharpie to the couch, when you do it, with the help of a ruler, you can create a streamlined, original design. You probably don’t want to use the sharpie on the parts of the furniture that you actually touch or sit on, but on the fronts of the arms of a couch or reading chair, just a series of lines can give it a modern, unique look.
- Become an architect. If you’ve ever been in an old house, you know that some walls have molding not just along the top and base, but also up and down the walls, creating serious visual interest. Even if you don’t live in an old house, you can create this look by simply getting some trim that you like and nailing it into the wall. Once it’s in place, paint it to match your walls and you have transformed your walls for relatively little money.
- Create your own art. You don’t have to be an artist to create a piece of wall art for any room of your house. Get a canvas and several different colors of acrylic paint. Squeeze little dollops of each color onto your canvas in a random pattern, and then just take your brush and start painting. What you’ll get is an original piece of abstract art that matches your room exactly.
- Don’t ignore the details. You can seriously improve the appearance of a plain staircase by painting, wall paper, or tiling the blank area under each individual step. Especially if you don’t want to hang anything on the walls (for fear it’ll be knocked off as you hurry down the stairs) this is a great way to add visual interest, and it takes no time at all.
- Paint an old piece of furniture. It’s as simple as that. If it’s scuffed, banged up, or scratched, just paint it a solid color.
